INTRODUCTION
=============
This document contains information about Pink Slip, a Control Panel by
Robert Gibson. Information specific to Pink Slip is given in “Using
Pink Slip”. Information about the author is provided in the last section,
“About the Author”.
USING PINK SLIP
===============
These sections are fairly detailed descriptions of how and why you may
use Pink Slip. It does not necessarily describe the only ways you can use
the program.
• If you use Pink Slip, please please please send me a note. I love to
hear from users of my software. My addresses (post and e-mail) are
given below in “About the Author”.
What Does Pink Slip Do?
----------------------
• Pink Slip allows you to add a Quit menu item to the Finder for use
in those memory-intense situations. You can also remove the item if
you don’t like it any more. It Does the trick described on p. 266 of
Feb/92 MacUser a bit more elegantly and without the need of “honing
your ResEdit skills.” Pink Slip also provides a means of quitting the
Finder without modifying anything.
Using Pink Slip
--------------
• Pink Slip requires System 7.0 or higher to function.
• Double-click on the Pink Slip icon to open the Control Panel window.
• To install a Quit menu item in a Finder’s File menu, click “Install...”.
To remove the Quit menu item, click “Remove...”.
To Quit immediately from the Finder without making any changes, click
“Quit now”. You should also use the Quit now button to quit from the
current Finder after you make changes (i.e. after installing or removing
a Quit menu item in the current Finder). The Quit now button causes the
Finder to exit gracefully. This is the safest way to quit from the Finder,
since it quits using the same technique as the Quit menu item, but
doesn’t involve changing the Finder.
• Balloon help is supported by Pink Slip.
• Although Pink Slip is a Control Panel, it does not have to be in the
Control Panels folder to function properly.
• If an error occurs while using Pink Slip, you will see an appropriate
alert.
Installing and Removing the Quit Menu Item
---------------------------------------
• Information listed in this section is applied to both the Install... and the
Remove... buttons. The only difference between the two is, of course,
what they actually do to the Finder’s File menu. Other than that, they
work the same. Installation or removal of the Quit item will be called
“modification” hereafter.
• Choosing one of the Finder modification buttons will bring up an open
file dialog. Here you can select any System 7.0 (or higher) Finder for
modification. You can select a Finder on another disk, or you can even
select the current Finder.
• If you select the current Finder for modification, you will see an alert
offering you three options. You can cancel the modification (click Cancel),
or you can continue updating the File menu and either return to the Control
Panel or force a quit. Forcing a quit is a dirty way of exiting the Finder
and is not always guaranteed to work properly. If you say OK, you should
always press Quit now immediately after the update is done. See below
for modifier keys which make modifying the current Finder much
simpler.
• It is only necessary to quit from the Finder after modifying the current
Finder. It is not required that you quit from the Finder if you modify the
Finder on, say, another disk.
• To update your menus by hitting Quit now, make sure no other processes
are running. Otherwise, you’ll have to quit from them all to bring back
the Finder.
• Holding down the option key while clicking on one of the modification
buttons automatically selects the current Finder.
• Holding down the shift key while clicking on one of the modification
buttons suppresses the alert and selects OK by default. You should
remember to press Quit now to update the menus.
• Holding down the command key while clicking on one of the
modification buttons automatically selects Quit now after modifying
the Finder you select. This should only be used when modifying the
current Finder (otherwise, it is unnecessary to quit from the Finder).
• To modify the current Finder, suppressing all dialogs and alerts, and
automatically quit to update the menus, hold down the option, command,
and shift keys while clicking on the “Install...” or “Remove...” button.
Quitting from the Finder
----------------------
• In System 7.0 and higher, the Finder is a process, just like any other open
application. Right now, TeachText (or whatever you are using now to
read this document) is probably a process. And just like any other
process, you can Quit the Finder. And, just as you will bring up the
next-to-front process when you quit this program, quitting from the
Finder will bring up the next-to-front process. If no other process is
running, the Finder will quit, and, since it can quit to nothing else, it is
re-launched by the System. This is how you update your File menu after
modification.
• Like quitting from any other program, quitting from the Finder frees
the memory it occupied.
• The main drawback of quitting from the Finder is that, since the Finder
controls the Apple menu, quitting from the Finder will cause you to
lose your Apple menu. Only the apple and the About menu item will
remain. You can get it back by reloading the Finder.
• To get the Finder running again, you must quit from all other
applications. The System opens the Finder by default when there are no
other processes to activate.
What Does “Pink Slip” Mean?
--------------------------
• Well, you want to fire the Finder, right?
• The icon is supposed to be a command key and a Finder crossed with
a Q to indicate that the Control Panel adds a command-Q facility
(Quit command) to your Finder.
